Meet Dr. Cox

Phillip R. Cox, DMD, MS

Dr. Phillip R. Cox is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He and his wife Charlotte live in the Birmingham area and have two grown sons. Their older son Joe is a medical student at UAB, and the younger Nick is a senior at Auburn University.

Dr. Cox is dedicated to his profession and truly enjoys the day-to-day experiences that come from working with patients of all ages. He currently practices orthodontics from three locations in the Alabama communities of Homewood, Gardendale and Pleasant Grove.

Although conservative in his diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Cox is always in constant pursuit of state-of-the-art orthodontics, striving for the best possible results in every case. Esthetics in orthodontics, such as clear braces and Invisalign®, are included in treatment options. In addition, Dr. Cox stays actively involved in the most current techniques for more complicated cases, such as early intervention orthodontics, surgical orthodontics, and combination prosthetic and/or periodontal orthodontics.  He makes it a priority to participate regularly in continuing education courses and seminars in order to keep abreast of what is most current in the field of orthodontics.

Dr. Cox received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1985. While in dental school, he served as president of the SGA and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society which accepts only those who have demonstrated superior scholarship and exemplary traits of character. At graduation, he received honors of Excellence in Operative Dentistry and Excellence in Orthodontics.

Afterwards, he completed a General Practice Residency at UAB Hospital, where he gained experience in providing dental treatment for medically-compromised patients and participated in dozens of orthognathic surgeries with the Department of Oral Surgery. Dr. Cox then continued his training at UAB in its three-year Orthodontic Residency Program. He received his degree in orthodontics in 1989, and opened his private practice later that year.

Since then, Dr. Cox has practiced orthodontics full-time.  With a desire to give something back to his profession and his community, Dr. Cox served more than ten years as a member of the Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Orthodontics at UAB.  He is active in organized dentistry, and has served as president of the Birmingham District Dental Society and as president of the UAB Orthodontic Alumni Organization. He currently sits on the Executive Council of the UAB School of Dentistry Alumni Association.

Dr. Cox is certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Because only about 1/3 of eligible orthodontists are Board Certified, passing the arduous certification process demonstrates an orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
